Damen Marine Components is supplying the rudder and steering system for a new coastal research vessel.

Damen Marine Components (DMC) supplied a single Barke® high-lift flap rudder and piston steering gear system to Holland Shipyards Group’s shipyard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam. They were installed in a 35 meter coastal research vessel built for the Norwegian Institute for Research on the Sea (IMR), the RV Prinsesse Ingrid Alexandra.

DMC’s Barke® flap rudders are specifically designed for research, fishing and dredging vessels that require excellent manoeuvrability, low noise and vibration levels, and class-leading fuel economy. Its progressively rotating flaps generate high lift at large rudder angles and low drag at small rudder angles, delivering the power you need in all situations. The closed linkage system also provides overload protection and prevents material from the surrounding water from entering the rudder assembly.

DMC’s piston rudder systems are an ideal match for Barke® flap rudders. They are extremely reliable and with multiple options in terms of rudder stock connections, rudder angles and cylinders, the installation process is efficient and economical in terms of space required.

The state-of-the-art ship will take on a variety of tasks. These range from data acquisition and sampling of fish stocks to launching and recovering ROVs, buoys, ocean landers, autonomous ocean gliders, AUVs and other equipment.

Worldwide delivery
Barke® flap rudders are installed on other specialist vessels including the British 90 meter research vessel RRS James Cook and the MN Colibri, a unique RoRo vessel built to transport launch components for the Ariane 5 and Soyuz heavy lift launch vehicles. DMC also supplied the complete steering system for Australia’s recently delivered 160 meter research and support vessel (RSV) Nuyina, including full spade rudder, steering gear and steering systems. Recently, a Barke® rudder and a piston rudder system were delivered for the Multi-Purpose Research Vessel of the NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) in New Zealand.

Wim Knoester, Sales and Marketing Manager at DMC commented: “We are confident that the combination of our Barke® flap rudder and piston steering system will serve IMR’s newest research vessel well for many years to come. It has always been a pleasure to continue our association with Holland Shipyards Group, which dates back to their inception over 40 years ago.”

Jules Custers of Holland Shipyards Group added: “We have every confidence in the quality and performance of the equipment designed, built and supplied by Damen Marine Components. You will contribute to a world-class research vessel capable of performing a variety of tasks.”

The two organizations already have another project underway where DMC has been commissioned to build five Ø2625 Optima nozzles for two newly built 3,600 DWT barges and three new 3,800 DWT MPP coasters.
