1. Four Leading Ladies in the Marine Industry Educate South Florida Youth.
14 Nov 2019 : WISTA members Anna Silva, Port Everglades, Lesley Karentz Buchanan, STAR Center, Christine Battles, Advanced Mechanical Enterprises/AME and Rachel Kotkowski with Royal Caribbean visited South Broward High School to educate students enrolled in the Marine Magnet Program and the Global Logistics program about the Marine Industry.
The panel spoke about their journey into the maritime community and gave advice on how to land in a career in our dynamic field. Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) is an international networking organization of more than 3,000 female professionals from all sectors of the maritime industry whose mission is to support women at the management level in the maritime, trading and logistics sectors.
2. India’s first full-fledged global cruise terminal in Kochi.
14 Nov 2019 : India’s first full-fledged international cruise terminal that is coming up at Ernakulam wharf in Willingdon Island will be commissioned in February 2020, Cochin Port Trust (CPT) chairperson M. Beena said on Wednesday.
The ₹25.72-crore cruise terminal with facilities to handle 5,000 tourists will be spread over 12,200 sft. It will bring under one roof personnel of Customs, Bureau of Immigration and CISF, speeding up paperwork. “Plans are also afoot to have regular helicopter services from the terminal to different tourist locales in Kerala. Its commissioning will see the revamping of the wharf, an area to stage traditional art forms, and the availability of ATM and food kiosks on the premises. There will also be a permanent space for selling artefacts and others to tourists, aimed at improving visitor experience,” she said.
Ms. Beena was addressing the media on board Costa Victoria, an Italian cruise vessel that sailed into Kochi from Venice, with over 2,000 guests. The vessel arrived from Venice for operating in the Indian Ocean region up to March. Socratis Sklavos, captain of the vessel, said Costa would launch its first LNG-powered cruise vessel Costa Smeralda in December.
3. Norwegian research ship disabled by fire, part crew evacuated, Atlantic.
13 Nov 2019 : Fire erupted in engine room of Norwegian research ship POLAR MARQUIS on Nov 11 in Senegal waters, where the ship is carrying out research works. Fire said to be extinguished, of 55 personnel and crew on board 30 were evacuated, the ship was disabled and taken on tow by research ship OCEAN MERMAID (IMO 9742443). As of 1230 UTC Nov 12, caravan was under way sailing in SE direction, port of destination unknown, with some 3 tugs escort.
4. Pirates Attack Italian-Flagged Ship off Mexico.
13 Nov 2019 : An Italian-flagged offshore patrol vessel has been attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Mexican news reports citing the Mexican Navy, two crew aboard the vessel Remas were injured in the attack and transferred to a nearby hospital.
The vessel had reportedly been approached in the Bay of Campeche by two boats with an estimated eight assailants. One person was shot in the leg while another suffered head injuries in the attack. Remas had 30 persons, including the crew, on board at the time of the attack.
5. ABS Introduces Industry’s 1st Guide to Tackle Containership Fire Issue.
11 Nov 2019 : Classification society ABS has issued the shipping industry’s first guide to address firefighting and safety systems of cargo holds of container vessels. The newly released ABS Guide for Fire-Fighting Systems for Cargo Areas of Container Carriers contains a broad range of notations to tackle cargo fires.
In the past, a series of high-profile fires occurred in cargo holds aboard boxships. This year alone has seen an alarming number of containership fires including Yantian Express, APL Le Havre, APL Vancouver, Grande America, E.R. Kobe and KMTC Hong Kong.
