HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has received Approval in Principle (AIP) for its innovative ammonia vent treatment system from ABS and the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR). This advanced system features compact scrubbers designed to treat ammonia fuel, which may be released during the purging process. It ensures that ammonia concentrations remain safe before being discharged through the vent mast, while also reducing wastewater production. ABS conducted thorough design reviews in alignment with class requirements and the IMO Interim Guidance.
Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the organization’s commitment to enhancing safety in ammonia use and supporting clients like HD KSOE in their efforts to develop technology that promotes low or zero carbon emissions in the maritime sector. This collaboration reflects a significant step toward sustainable shipping practices.
Young-Joon Nam, head of the SD Business Division at HD KSOE, noted that this certification bolsters the company’s portfolio of eco-friendly technologies. He expressed a commitment to advancing unique solutions and leading the global market for environmentally friendly vessels.
ABS continues to provide essential guidance on the use of ammonia as a marine fuel, with resources available for industry stakeholders.
