During a recent meeting of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) governing council in London, a proposal was put forth aimed at enhancing the safety of merchant ships. The framework outlined is designed to ensure the secure evacuation of crew members, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the lives of seafarers amidst ongoing conflicts.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez addressed the assembly, highlighting the tragic loss of at least seven merchant sailors due to the current hostilities. He urged that these individuals should not be caught in the crossfire of larger geopolitical issues that can escalate tensions in the region.

Dominguez called for a de-escalation of conflict to allow for the safe passage of seafarers, stressing the urgency of protecting those who navigate dangerous waters. The IMO’s continued efforts seek to mitigate risks faced by sailors and ensure their safety in volatile maritime environments. By implementing this framework, the organisation aims to create a more secure operational landscape for seafaring personnel.
