India has secured its first cargo of Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in years, following a temporary easing of U.S. sanctions on Tehran’s oil and refined fuels. Previously, India had avoided Iranian energy purchases since 2019 due to Western sanctions. The sanctioned tanker, Aurora, is expected to arrive at Mangalore’s west coast port soon.
The Iranian LPG will be divided among three major fuel retailers: Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. The cargo was purchased from a trader, with payments set to be made in rupees.
Last year, India consumed 33.15 million metric tons of LPG, with imports meeting about 60% of its demand, predominantly sourced from the Middle East. The country is also working to move stranded LPG cargoes from the Strait of Hormuz and load LPG onto empty vessels in the Persian Gulf.
