During a drainage improvement project in St. Augustine, Florida, crews uncovered a timber section of a maritime vessel believed to be from the 19th century. The project, which is taking place on King Street and State Road A1A, holds historical value for the city. As a result, the Florida Department of Transportation sub-contracted with Southeastern Archaeological Research (SEARCH) to assist with the excavation. SEARCH is a global leader in archaeology and will provide cultural heritage services for the project.

The Florida Department of Transportation is committed to being sensitive to the unique needs of the communities it serves, including the potential presence of historical sites and artifacts within construction sites. District 2 Secretary Greg Evans expressed gratitude to SEARCH Archaeology for their careful efforts to preserve the vessel and looks forward to learning more about its significance to the region.
