The christening of the all-electric, battery-powered eWolf in the Port of San Diego marks a new era in ship electrification. Owned by Crowley, the eWolf utilizes an electric propulsion system from ABB, aiming to achieve zero-emissions operations. This move aligns with the Port of San Diego’s Maritime Clean Air Strategy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly.
The eWolf, with a 6.2 megawatt-hour energy storage system, showcases cutting-edge technology for marine electrification in the United States. Designed by Crowley’s Engineering Services group in collaboration with ABB, the vessel can perform a full day’s work on a single charge while minimizing operating costs by generating electricity onshore. The eWolf is set to replace a diesel-consuming tugboat, contributing to the reduction of over 30,000 gallons of diesel used per year in the San Diego port area.
The collaborative effort between industry and government partners, including the Port of San Diego, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District, and environmental agencies, has led to the development of the eWolf. With ABB’s comprehensive system integration and supply of advanced technologies, such as the Onboard DC Grid™ power distribution platform and Marine Pilot products, the eWolf exemplifies the potential for high-performance, zero-emission vessel operations. This milestone underscores the industry’s commitment to cleaner, more efficient shipping practices.
