ABS and HD KSOE Partner to Develop Zero-Carbon Ship Technologies

ABS and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) have recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development and certification of innovative systems for next-generation, zero-carbon ships. The focus of the MOU, titled “Cooperation on the Advanced Zero-Carbon Ships,” is on integrating advanced technologies in three main areas. These include a novel liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo handling system that utilizes a full re-liquefaction system to suppress boil-off gas (BOG) for zero-carbon LNG carriers, a comprehensive ammonia fuel supply system for large commercial vessels, and an efficient integrated system that enhances re-liquefaction with cold ammonia fuel supply to improve system efficiency and reduce power consumption.

Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of collaboration in delivering the rapid technological advances required by the industry. He expressed pride in expanding the relationship with HD KSOE and looks forward to working together on innovative concepts to optimize and enhance next-generation vessels. Sung Young-jae, HD KSOE Vice President and Research Director of Decarbonization Research Lab, echoed the commitment to advanced technological developments for the next-generation vessel market through collaboration. Both parties are focused on presenting a long-term vision for gas carriers and zero-carbon fueled ships, with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
