ClassNK has granted its ‘AFVC(FD)(EV)’ notation to Positive Challenger, a car carrier operated by Eastern Car Liner Ltd. and managed by ECL Shipmanagement Limited. This notation is awarded to vessels equipped with additional firefighting measures specifically designed for transporting electric vehicles (EVs). The shipping industry is taking steps to address the unique challenges posed by EV fires, including difficulties in extinguishing them and the risk of re-ignition. In response to these concerns, ClassNK has issued guidelines for the safe transportation of electric vehicles, outlining the characteristics of EV fires and providing guidance on how to respond.

The FD notation, one of the five types of ‘AFVC’ notations, is awarded to vessels that have implemented effective measures for early detection of vehicle abnormalities and fires. Positive Challenger stands out for its three anomaly detection functions using AI cameras, including smoke detection, heat detection, and rapid temperature rise detection. These features enable the crew to identify vehicles on fire at an earlier stage compared to traditional smoke detectors. If anomalies such as the generation of flammable gas or a rise in vehicle body temperature are detected, the system can alert the crew promptly.

Positive Challenger’s advanced firefighting measures are a result of the vessel’s adoption of innovative technology to enhance safety during the transportation of electric vehicles. By incorporating AI cameras for anomaly detection, the ship can detect potential issues early on and alert the crew to take necessary actions. ClassNK’s evaluation of these features highlights the vessel’s capability to identify and respond to vehicle fires effectively, contributing to the overall safety and security of EV transportation. The commitment to implementing such measures reflects the industry’s ongoing efforts to address the unique challenges associated with EV transportation and ensure the safe carriage of electric vehicles.
