Algeria plans to build a 1,000km rail network to transport iron ore from its largest mine in the west of the North African Arab country.
A government technical committee visited the planned railway site on Tuesday and will conduct a study on the route of the railway line.
The railway will connect the Gara Djebilet mine in western Tindouf province to Bechar province in northwestern Algeria, the newspaper said.
“The project involves the construction of a railway that will extend some 1,000 km to transport iron ore from the Tindouf mine to Bechar,” the paper added, noting when the project would start. Gâra Djebilet, which became operational in mid-2022, is one of the world’s largest iron ore deposits with estimated reserves of nearly 3.5 billion tonnes, of which approximately 1.7 billion tonnes are mineable.
