A cargo ship experienced a flooding emergency off the coast of Seogwipo, Jeju Island, prompting a swift response from the Coast Guard. Despite challenging weather conditions, the team successfully rescued all 11 crew members, including Korean, Myanmar, and Indonesian nationals. Strong winds and waves made helicopter and lifeboat rescue operations unsuitable, but the Coast Guard’s ships were able to approach the distressed vessel and execute the rescue mission without any loss of life.
The 1,959-ton cargo ship Geumyang 6 reported the emergency on Thursday night, leading to the prompt deployment of three Coast Guard ships and a helicopter to the accident site. However, the helicopter encountered strong winds, and the lifeboat on the distressed vessel was unusable due to high waves. President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a directive to mobilize all available manpower and equipment for the rescue operation, and the crew of patrol ship successfully rescued all 11 crew members using a ladder rope.
Following the rescue, all crew members were reported to be in good health and are currently recuperating at a lodging facility in Seogwipo. The Coast Guard plans to investigate the cause of the accident, which was reportedly due to the vessel tilting following impact from a large wave and a crunching sound.
