The explosion occurred on a chartered fishing vessel at berth, with the ignition source being a lithium-ion battery connected to a faulty charger that bypassed safety features. The vessel was deemed irreparable after the incident.

The explosion on the fishing vessel, which occurred late at night while anchored, resulted in significant damage, including debris being thrown up to 30 meters away. The investigation revealed that the battery system connected to the pot winch had experienced previous issues, with the owner purchasing a new charger and installation services on the day of the incident. The installation of the new system may have bypassed necessary safety measures, and the lithium-ion battery site was not properly ventilated.

AMSA emphasized the importance of implementing proper procedures for charging electronic equipment and battery systems onboard, considering the risk of thermal runaway. The release of toxic and flammable gases during a thermal runaway can lead to fires that are difficult to extinguish. It is crucial for lithium-ion batteries to be installed in compliance with national standards for merchant ships and to have an approved battery management system to prevent overcharge events. Ventilation must also meet manufacturer specifications to ensure safety.
