Admiral D K Joshi, the Lt. Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, spoke at the 1st Indian Maritime Heritage Conclave in New Delhi, emphasizing the region’s rich maritime history dating back many centuries. He highlighted how this legacy played a crucial role in facilitating trade, commerce, and cultural exchanges with far-east nations. The recent naming of Sri Vijaya Puram symbolizes the historical significance of these ties.
In his address, Admiral Joshi also discussed the ambitious development projects planned for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These projects, conceptualized over the past 6-7 years by the Islands Development Agency, focus on enhancing the region’s shipping and ports infrastructure. Key initiatives include the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Galathea Bay, Deep Water Port at Altanta Bay, and Dry Cargo Transhipment Terminal at Port-Meadows. These projects are seen as essential for driving economic growth and positioning the islands as a key player in India’s development vision.
The Lt. Governor emphasized that these mega infrastructure projects are crucial in propelling the Andaman and Nicobar Islands towards achieving goals such as ‘Viksit Bharat’, ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’, and the vision of a 5 Trillion economy. By investing in strategic projects and leveraging the region’s maritime heritage, the islands are poised to play a significant role in India’s economic growth in the coming years.
