The Maritime Board in Kochi is planning to start a ship service from Beypore, catering to the large expatriate population from the Malabar region. The service is expected to address the issues caused by frequent hikes in flight ticket prices for expatriates, and would also benefit tourists. According to Maritime Board Chairman NS Pillai, the tender for the service will be invited in early January, and private entrepreneurs as well as companies with central government participation will be able to participate.

There has been a long-standing demand for ship services, and efforts to initiate the service have gained support from various quarters, including the Shipping Corporation of India and Union Ministers. Sharjah Indian Association President Adv YA Rahim and Malabar Development Council President CE Chakunni have approached the Chief Minister and Union Ministers for the ship service, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonawal recently gave the green light for the project after it was raised in Parliament by Hibi Eden MP. With additional support, the service could be started quickly and would provide a more affordable and accessible travel option for expatriates and tourists.
