Bramble Energy, a UK-based fuel-cell technology developer, has achieved a milestone in sustainable energy by successfully testing its hydrogen fuel-cell system on a 17-m narrowboat, making it the world’s first hydrogen electric boat. This initiative is part of the HyTime project, supported by the Energy Entrepreneurs Fund, and aims to showcase hydrogen as a viable fuel source for maritime vessels. The fuel-cell system allows the boat to operate with zero emissions and extends its range, with a capacity to store 14 kg of hydrogen and achieve a range of up to 960 km.
In addition to the hydrogen fuel-cell system, the boat is equipped with solar panels on its roof, providing supplementary power to the battery system and enhancing the boat’s efficiency and autonomy. This combination of renewable energy sources demonstrates Bramble Energy’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The company also received nearly £1.0M in government funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in 2022, highlighting the government’s support for innovative solutions that contribute to achieving net-zero emissions.
The collaboration with custom engine builder Barrus further emphasizes Bramble Energy’s efforts to pioneer hydrogen fuel-cell technology in the maritime industry, with the goal of creating a greener future for maritime vessels.
