A crew member of the Silversea cruise ship Silver Nova was medically evacuated by the Brazilian Coast Guard after sustaining serious injuries while working on elevator maintenance. The ship changed its route to get closer to a port where the injured crew member could receive proper medical care. The captain requested assistance from the Brazilian Coast Guard to airlift the crew member to a hospital on land.
Passenger Richard DeAgazio, part of YoloAdventure, reported that the captain informed everyone on board about the medical emergency through the ship’s loudspeaker system. The injured crew member, either a deckhand or engineer, was hurt while servicing an elevator and suffered serious injuries in the elevator shaft. Crew volunteers with O-type blood were asked to donate at the ship’s medical center to help the injured crew member.
After the accident, the ship headed to the nearest port for the evacuation. A helicopter from the Brazilian Coast Guard arrived a few hours later to airlift the injured crew member, who underwent a 5-hour surgery and is now in critical but stable condition in the ICU. An update from Richard DeAgazio mentioned that the crew member is expected to be out of the ICU in a few days, with a positive outlook on recovery. Prayers are being sent for the crew member’s speedy recovery.
