Cruise Director Handoff Completed
Lee Mason officially took back the mic carnival celebration this week with the ship departing on Sunday 2nd April 2023, a 7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Miami to Puerto Plata, San Juan and St. Maarten.
The popular cruise director has interim contracts but returned carnival celebration recently transitioning back into his leadership role. The handover phase is used to help teams adapt to new leadership styles and to help a new or returning cruise director learn new policies or practices since their last contract.
Mason was the one first cruise director assigned carnival celebration when the ship debuted, and now returns to continue the fun.
“We are about to set sail on my first post-contract cruise.” announced Maurer from the bridge just before the safety briefing of the guests on Sunday morning. “So much fun to have!”
Mason succeeds Chris “The Flying Scotsman” Williams, another of the company’s most popular cruise directors, who is now himself between contracts and enjoying his free time with his family.
“It is always an honor and a pleasure to experience a cruise with (Williams) – He’s done wonders for Celebration and the Fun Squad family here on board.” said Mason.
Williams will return carnival celebration in late July and will become the ship’s primary cruise director beginning July 31. Mason will be again carnival celebrationCruise director in September. There are no other cruise director assignments announced for Mason at this time.
It is not uncommon for cruise lines to transfer cruise directors to other ships, particularly to fill gaps in vacation times for other cruise directors or to attend training courses on different ship classes or in different sailing areas.
What cruise directors do
No matter what ship he serves on, Mason brings a strong personality and creative energy to his role as cruise director.
Cruise directors work throughout the ship with duties such as making onboard announcements, launching major production shows, hosting question-and-answer sessions, and directing dance parties and other special events, as well as greeting and interacting with guests.
Everyone brings their own style to the role, whether it’s through specific jokes, colorful outfits, dance moves, or other flair that cruise ship passengers love. In fact, many frequent cruisers plan future cruises based on where their favorite cruise directors are currently based.
Mason has been with Carnival Cruise Line since November 2016 and has served as cruise director on a dozen ships across the fleet, including carnival celebration‘s sister ship, carnival.
Mason is one of the company’s most popular cruise directors, not only with guests, but also with the teams he leads. Mason has received multiple peer awards while at Carnival, including the Cast Champion Award, the Peer Choice Award and the Leader of the Year Award.

carnival celebration is based in PortMiami and offers 7-day Eastern and Western Caribbean roundtrip itineraries calling at some of the region’s most popular ports, including St. Thomas, Roatan, Cozumel and Costa Maya.
Select sailings are also available on 8-night Southern Caribbean itineraries visiting Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.
