Carnival bravery rescue
Carnival bravery was contacted by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, March 26, 2023, who alerted the cruise ship to a vessel taking on water 386 miles (621 kilometers) off the Alabama coast.
The ship in distress was the 44-foot recreational boat Snail Mail with three boaters on board and had activated onboard emergency equipment to indicate its condition.
The USCG received the emergency alert and addressed Carnival bravery as the nearest ship that can assist the vehicle in need. At that time, Carnival bravery was approximately 35 nautical miles (40 miles / 65 km) from the Snail Mail. An Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry crew was also mobilized.

The Conquest-class cruise ship deviated slightly from its route to intercept the distressed craft. Carnival bravery was en route to its first port of call on the 5-day Western Caribbean itinerary, Mayan Coastwhere the ship will dock on Monday 27 March.
A lifeboat – one of the cruise ship’s lifeboats – was lowered into the water and the three boatmen – all Honduran men – were safely boarded and taken to the cruise ship. They have received adequate medical attention, food and water and are reportedly in good condition.
“Special thanks to the crew of the Carnival Valor for rescuing all three people on board the sinking ship.” said Lt. jg Gretchen Gochnour, a duty officer at District 8 Command Center. “The Coast Guard urges boaters to emulate the Snail Mail by having an EPIRB and geolocation devices on board before setting sail.”
“In addition, the Coast Guard encourages professional seafarers to participate in AMVER (Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System) and self-report their location as it has played a critical role in this rescue.”
Next Steps
As the rescued boaters were taken on board during a day at sea, they will remain on board Carnival bravery until the ship calls at the Costa Maya on Monday. The ship is supposed to be in port from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During this time, boaters will be taken to the relevant authorities.
A statement from Carnival Cruise Line confirms this “Carnival Valor’s itinerary will not be affected.” Current tracking data also shows the ship on course as planned for Costa Maya.

After Costa Maya the ship will pay a visit Cozumel, Mexico on Tuesday before enjoying Wednesday as another day at sea and returning to New Orleans on Thursday, March 30th.
This is not the first rescue or emergency situation that Carnival bravery was involved. In November 2022, the ship made headlines around the world overboard passenger rescued by another vehicle after nearly a full day in the water.
The ship is based in Louisiana year-round and offers 4-5 day cruises to the Western Caribbean. The shorter cruises only visit Cozumel, while the longer cruises also include Costa Maya or Costa Maya Progressdepending on the departure date.
The 110,000 gross ton Carnival bravery joined the Carnival fleet in 2004. The ship has a guest capacity of 2,980 passengers based on double occupancy and up to 3,756 guests when fully booked with all berths occupied. Around 1,200 international crew members are also on board to provide excellent service.
