The central government project to promote RO-RO and RO-PAX ferry service in the port city of Goa is set to be built at a whopping Rs 21 crore. The passenger jetty at the port of Vasco Bay-Mormugao is among 42 sites in coastal India selected for development under the Sagarmala project to boost domestic tourism.

In response to an unstarred question on Tuesday, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, told Rajya Sabha that the government has already proposed expanding ferry services to link tourist potential spots along the west coast from Kanyakumari to Goa , to improve tourism and facilitate traffic flow on coastal roads.

The MPA will be the implementation body for the project. While Goa has only one jetty under the Central program, Maharashtra receives the maximum number of RO-RO and RO-PAX jetties, followed by Odisha, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

Given the “success of these projects, the high demand and the potential,” the central government planned additional projects in nearly 30 locations in Maharashtra in the middle of last year; four projects in Andhra Pradesh, two projects in Odisha and one each in Tamil Nadu and Goa etc.

At the Maritime India Summit 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to introduce urban water transportation systems in Gujarat, Goa, Kerala and Maharashtra.
