India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) has canceled tenders to purchase cranes and container handling equipment for Chabahar Port, further complicating an already troubled overseas venture. The cancellation of tenders comes as a result of US sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear program. IPGL had issued a tender in September 2022 to purchase four new ship-to-shore cranes and 14 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGCs), among other equipment. However, the bidders were hesitant to submit quotations due to the sanctions imposed on Iran. As a result, India Ports Global decided to discharge all the tenders without providing any reasons.

The cancellation of the tenders has caused a delay in the development of Chabahar Port and the official start of the ten-year contract for its operation. IPGL’s plans for purchasing the necessary equipment are currently unclear. This delay further adds to the complications faced by the Indian company in its overseas venture in the face of US sanctions on Iran.
