Chevron and the Angelicoussis Group will explore the use of tankers in ammonia transport under a new Joint Study Agreement (JSA).

The scope of the study includes the market for ammonia transportation, the existing infrastructure, the safety considerations related to the caustic and toxic chemical, the requirements for next-generation vessels, and a system to transport ammonia between the US Gulf Coast and Europe.

Future opportunities will focus on additional global markets, the companies said.

As a potential low-carbon or zero-carbon future fuel for the maritime industry. The JSA aims to build knowledge on the technical and commercial feasibility of ammonia at scale.

“By collaborating with Chevron Shipping Company on this study, we aim to make a significant contribution to preparing our industries for the transition to lower-carbon operations,” said Maria Angelicoussis, CEO of Angelicoussis Group. “The combination of our long history of maritime transportation of liquid and gaseous fuels with Chevron’s extensive experience in the energy business provides a solid foundation for this endeavor.”

“We are pleased to be collaborating with the Angelicoussis Group on this study, to help advance low-carbon energy at scale and advance the maritime transport of ammonia,” said Mark Ross, President of Chevron Shipping Company. “I’m proud of the collaboration between Chevron Shipping, Chevron New Energies and the Angelicoussis Group and look forward to further advancing our energy transition goals.”

“Ammonia has potential as a hydrogen carrier and is recognized as one of the alternative fuel options to decarbonize shipping. We believe this study will help identify the technical, operational and commercial challenges of transporting ammonia at scale and using it safely and sustainably as a fuel,” said Stelios Troulis, Green Ships and Energy Transition Director, Angelicoussis Group.
