Filipino Seafarer Missing After MV Tutor Hit by Missile in Red Sea

A Filipino seafarer missing aboard the MV Tutor vessel. The vessel was hit by missile and drone attacks from Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden on June 12. Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac disclosed that out of the 22 Filipino sailors on board, one is currently missing.

Cacdac mentioned that the ship sustained damage in critical areas, including the engine room, which was flooded. Efforts are ongoing to locate and ensure the safety of the missing seafarer. The Philippine government is coordinating rescue operations for the remaining crew members with the assurance that they are safe while awaiting rescue.

Prior to this incident, Filipino seafarers were prohibited from boarding vessels passing through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden due to their designation as “war-like zones.” The Department of Migrant Workers required detailed itineraries from manning agencies to ensure the safety of Filipino crew members. Cacdac emphasized the need to review existing policies and processes to enhance protection for seafarers in light of recent events.
