Japanese classification society ClassNK has granted approval in principle (AiP) to Yanmar Power Technology (YPT) for their maritime hydrogen fuel cell system, making it the first AiP certification for such a system developed by a Japanese manufacturer. The 300 kW system is designed with integrated auxiliary components, such as gas valve units, to simplify installation on ships. It also allows for parallel connection of multiple units and adjustments to the number of hydrogen fuel cell modules to adapt to various ship power output requirements. ClassNK reviewed the system in line with its guidelines, conducted required tests and risk assessments, and issued the AiP after confirming compliance with prescribed requirements.
Yanmar introduced its maritime hydrogen fuel cell system in August 2023 and made the first delivery to the passenger ship HANARIA in November 2023. The company has also begun developing a hydrogen-fueled 4-stroke high-speed engine for power generation for coastal vessels in Japan as part of the Nippon Foundation’s zero-emission ship demonstration experiment. This marks a significant step forward in the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly propulsion systems for the maritime industry.
