The CMA CGM Group has introduced a new generation of container ships by taking delivery of the CMA CGM MERMAID, the first in a series of 10 new 2,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered container ships. These ships aim to increase energy efficiency and environmental performance by reducing CO2 emissions by up to 20%, in line with the group’s decarbonization strategy. CMA CGM has invested over $15 billion in its fleet renewal program, with these new ships being an important step towards the goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2050.

The new ships, featuring a unique design, will be progressively deployed across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe to transport goods over short distances, facilitating the shift in traffic from road to sea. The ships’ design improves energy efficiency and environmental performance and will join CMA CGM’s fleet of around 620 ships, with more than 30 already powered by alternative energy. These ships emit up to -20% CO2 compared to similar size ships using conventional marine fuel.

Powered by LNG, a lower-carbon energy source, the new container ships will also be equipped with advanced technologies to maximize energy efficiency and environmental performance, and are more comfortable for their crew thanks to modern interiors and cabins. With a focus on improving energy performance, the ships will also be equipped with a generator to provide the energy required to operate the electrical systems on board while at sea. Furthermore, the ships are set to be equipped with a fuel cell powered by hydrogen, which will result in zero emissions when berthed. These ships are part of the group’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and embrace more sustainable practices in the shipping industry.
