Cochin Shipyard, India’s largest shipyard and the third largest listed yard in Mumbai, is making its largest ever investment in capacity expansion. They are constructing a new Rs1,799 crore dry dock which will allow them to build large LNG carriers, Capesize and Suezmax vessels, oil rigs, semi submersibles, and other large vessels, putting them in the elite list of global shipyards.
In addition to the dry dock, Cochin Shipyard is also building a Rs970 crore international ship repair facility at Willingdon Island in Cochin Port. This will increase India’s ship repair capacity and position it as a repair hub in the region. Chairman and Managing Director, Madhu Nair, is leading this effort to create high-grade infrastructure for the country.
The new dry dock will start operations in May or June with the construction of a trailing suction hopper dredger for the state-owned Dredging Corporation of India Ltd, costing over Rs800 crore. Cochin Shipyard’s expansion marks a significant shift in their reputation from a “sleepy, also-ran yard” to a shipbuilder of global repute, largely due to their construction of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier and other niche vessels with innovative and new technology promoting green shipping.
