Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has stated that discussions and feasibility studies are currently underway for a ship repair project. India’s current share in the global ship repair market is only about one percent, but the setting up of ship repair clusters aligns with the initiatives under Maritime India Vision 2030.
Nair also mentioned that CSL currently holds about 50 percent market share in the Indian repair industry. The company plans to begin operations at a new dry dock in Kochi by May and intends to commence the assembly phase of a new dredger construction project for the Dredging Corporation of India at the dry dock. On the financial front, CSL achieved 62 percent growth in turnover in Q3, reaching ₹1,021 crore, with a 110 percent rise in PAT to ₹248 crore, attributed to the completion of naval and other shipbuilding projects.
Additionally, CSL’s subsidiaries, Udupi CSL and Hoogly CSL, secured contracts for tugs, European short sea vessels, and electric inland vessels. The three ship repair units at Mumbai, Kolkata, and Port Blair contributed ₹200 crore to the turnover, according to Nair. He expressed optimism about achieving the highest turnover in the yard’s history, both from shipbuilding and ship repairs, if everything goes as planned.
