HMM and SIPG have announced a partnership to focus on bunkering methanol and LNG services at Shanghai Port, with the goal of supporting carbon reduction and promoting global shipping new energy cooperation. HMM aims to achieve a Net-Zero emissions target for its entire business by 2050, emphasizing the need for port bunkering infrastructure for clean marine fuel to reach this goal. HMM has nine new methanol-fuel containerships to be delivered between 2025 and 2026, contributing to the industry’s shift towards cleaner energy sources.
SIPG is working towards becoming a green energy hub in the Asia-Pacific region, offering bonded LNG bunkering services for shipping companies worldwide since 2022. The preparations for green methanol bunkering in Shanghai Port have also been completed, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. While many container lines have ordered methanol-fueled tonnage, the availability of green methanol remains a concern, highlighting the importance of partnerships like the one between HMM and SIPG in advancing the use of cleaner fuels in the shipping industry.
