Construction work at the port in Guwahati is making rapid progress, with the development of a new road to connect Pandu port directly to the national highway outside the city. This will help to prevent heavy vehicles involved in unloading Exim goods from congesting and impacting traffic within the city. The project, which is estimated to cost Rs 150 crore, is being carried out in two phases, with 30% of the work completed so far and the rest expected to be finished by the end of the year, according to A. Selva Kumar, director of the Inland Waterways Authority.
In addition to the road construction, the Inland Waterways Authority is also developing a facility for ship repair and maintenance services in Guwahati. This center will provide services for both small and large ships using the Brahmaputra River. By offering these services locally, it will save both time and money for ship owners, who will no longer need to travel long distances to ports like Calcutta for repairs. Overall, these developments are aimed at improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the port and shipping activities in the region.
The construction of the new road and the development of the ship repair facility are significant initiatives that aim to enhance the operations at the port in Guwahati. By providing better connectivity and local repair services, these projects will contribute to reducing congestion and costs, ultimately improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of port and shipping operations in the area.
