A worker is missing and presumed dead after a working vessel collided with the giant semisubmersible crane ship Saipem 7000 in the Port of Rotterdam during maintenance. The incident occurred in a narrow basin at a repair yard in the densely built-up inner harbor district of Botlek.
The collision caused a worker to fall into the water, prompting local emergency services to deploy diving teams, sonar, and ROV devices for a rescue operation. However, the effort shifted to search and recovery, and the victim has not been found. The cause of the accident is unknown, but a multiagency investigation is expected to begin soon.
Saipem 7000 is one of the world’s largest crane ships, capable of completing full installations of offshore developments. It can lift up to 14,000 tonnes at a time with twin cranes and is DP3 enabled for propulsion and anchorless stationkeeping. The incident has raised concerns about safety and has prompted an investigation into the cause of the collision.
