Crew members Ammar Ajmad and Faye Basa, who met while working for Holland America Line, had their shoreside wedding plans in Manila fall through due to immigration challenges. Instead of canceling their ceremony, their colleagues on the Westerdam cruise ship planned an impromptu wedding for them onboard. The couple’s chosen date would have allowed them to spend extra time in Basa’s home country and have her father, a 20-year employee of HAL, attend. The crew reserved the Crow’s Nest lounge for the ceremony, decorated it with flowers and rose petals, and hosted a dinner in the main dining room while the ship was docked in Manila. Family members, friends, photographers, makeup artists, and an imam were all onboarded for the event.
The unique advantages of getting married on a cruise ship include the all-inclusive price, which is often more affordable than land-based weddings. Small and straightforward weddings can cost upwards of $1,500 without the fare. Despite the immigration challenges that threatened their wedding plans, the impromptu ceremony onboard the Westerdam was a fitting conclusion to a love story that began and blossomed through Holland America Line. The couple’s colleagues went above and beyond to make their wedding day special, and it turned out to be a memorable and unique event for everyone involved.
