The Directorate General of Shipping in India has tasked the Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM-Indore) with conducting a comprehensive study on the ‘Age Norms and Other Qualitative Parameters’ for ships introduced in 2023. The study comes after industry stakeholders expressed concerns about the age limit of 25 years set for oil tankers, bulk carriers, and general cargo vessels. The study aims to evaluate the impact of the order, provide policy recommendations, and suggest a strategic plan for implementation.
Following pushback from the industry, the Directorate General of Shipping decided to review its order with a holistic approach covering the entire maritime sector. The study will assess the economic, safety, environmental, and operational implications of the proposed order on age restrictions for Indian tonnage. It will also examine how the order may intersect with international regulations on green shipping and emission reduction.
The study conducted by IIM-Indore will analyze the potential benefits and drawbacks of implementing age restrictions on Indian tonnage and evaluate the economic and operational impacts. It will assess the challenges and opportunities for ship owners, shipyards, repairers, and recyclers and provide evidence-based recommendations on related policy decisions. The study will also focus on integrating environmental considerations into the proposed age restriction policy and suggest strategies to promote investment in shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure to support the growth of Indian national tonnage.
