Dakarai, a young boy inspired by his fisherman father, dreams of becoming a ship navigator. At just nine years old, he has taken a significant step toward that goal by attending the LJM Maritime Academy summer camp in Nassau, The Bahamas, sponsored by Disney Cruise Line. The two-week camp immerses Bahamian students in maritime education, offering lessons in navigation, engineering, and practical skills like nautical rope tying.
Before attending the camp, Dakarai was unaware of the maritime opportunities available in his own country. “Now I know, and I want to be in a white-on-white cadet suit in the future,” he expressed, reflecting the aspirations shared by many campers eager to explore careers at sea.
Nameiko Miller, registrar at LJM Maritime Academy, emphasized the importance of introducing students to the maritime industry at a young age. This year, thanks to Disney Cruise Line’s support, the camp doubled its number of participants, highlighting the company’s commitment to fostering future maritime leaders.
Disney Cruise Line aims to inspire young Bahamians by showcasing the diverse career opportunities available in the maritime sector, while also sponsoring cadet scholarships for aspiring ship captains and leaders.
