Adrian Parungao reported on the recent updates provided by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) regarding two vessels with Filipino seafarers that were attacked by Houthi rebels. The DMW Chief, Hans Leo Cacdac, shared that the Department of Foreign Affairs is actively working with foreign governments to secure the release of 17 Filipino seafarers aboard MV Galaxy Leader, who were captured in November 2023.
Additionally, Cacdac mentioned that the remains of two Filipino seafarers from MV True Confidence, attacked in March 2024, are expected to return to the Philippines soon. Eleven other Filipino seafarers from the same vessel have already safely returned home. The DMW is also considering prohibiting vessels from sailing in the Red Sea following recent incidents, with Cacdac stating that they are reviewing the current policy in light of these events.
In a separate incident, the MV Tutor came under attack in the Red Sea on June 12, leading to the rescue of 21 Filipino seafarers. However, one seafarer is still missing. The DMW continues to monitor the situation and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of Filipino seafarers in the region.
