The battery-electric hydrofoiling boat VS-9 has been added to the fleet of Fullers360, New Zealand’s largest ferry operator. This nine-meter vessel can transport passengers at a speed of 25 knots and has a range of up to 50 nautical miles. During sea trials, the VS-9 performed well in waves up to one meter and uses around 55kW of power while cruising at 25 knots, which is impressive for its size. The vessel has been certified by Maritime New Zealand and meets international DNV standards.
Fullers360 is the first major ferry operator to incorporate a certified electric hydrofoiling tourism vessel into its fleet. Passengers can choose between an Electric Hydrofoil Experience or a private charter, both offering breathtaking views of Auckland’s skyline and the Hauraki Gulf. This marks the beginning of a shift towards sustainable marine transport, with larger 100-seater versions of electric hydrofoiling vessels currently in development.
Vessev’s CEO, Eric Laakmann, believes that in the next decade, electric hydrofoiling vessels will become a common sight on major bodies of water, offering new services and experiences. The introduction of the VS-9 by Fullers360 represents a significant milestone in the transition to sustainable marine transport. This innovative vessel showcases New Zealand’s commitment to environmental sustainability and sets a new standard for the industry.
