The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) is launching a new educational program called the Common Core Curriculum on Principles and Techniques for Safety Investigators, starting in 2024. This initiative is aimed at improving maritime safety standards by providing essential competencies to new and aspiring safety investigators. The curriculum, certified by ISO 29993:2017, is expected to set a new benchmark in maritime safety investigation training.
Spanning 20 weeks, the curriculum is divided into four phases and covers 12 comprehensive units. It offers a mix of asynchronous learning and interactive online sessions with EMSA experts, as well as a five-day in-person session at EMSA’s premises. The program targets individuals interested in pursuing careers as Maritime Safety Investigators within their national administrations, with participants from various EU and non-EU countries involved in maritime safety projects.
EMSA’s Common Core Curriculum aims to standardize safety investigation practices and promote cooperation among maritime professionals. By providing a standardized approach to training, EMSA is not only enhancing the quality of maritime safety investigations but also fostering a culture of safety and prevention in maritime operations. This initiative represents a significant milestone in maritime safety education and is expected to contribute to the development of highly skilled safety investigators in the industry.
