A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning aboard the coastal freighter Everwin Star II in Manila, resulting in the death of a cadet and injuries to two crewmembers. The explosion, which took place in a paint locker while the vessel was docked at Vitas Pier 18 in the Tondo district, led to the untimely passing of Timothy James Lumagui. Local firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly, but unfortunately, Lumagui’s body was found at the scene. Crewmembers Lowie Belen and Alfred de Leon suffered third-degree burns and were promptly taken to a hospital for medical attention.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the explosion, with suspicions pointing towards flammable paint fumes or a potential leak of LPG. Everwin Star II, a 1,500 dwt domestic freighter registered in the Philippines, is primarily involved in local interisland trade based on AIS data. Notably, the vessel has not undergone any international port state inspections in the past.

The tragic incident highlights the dangers that maritime workers face on a daily basis, underscoring the importance of stringent safety protocols and procedures to prevent such accidents in the future. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and we hope for a thorough investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this devastating event.
