Captain Kate McCue’s attempt at baking
In 2015, Kate McCue became champion celebrity summit, who made history as the first woman to command a cruise megaship. Since then, she has captained a number of Celebrity Cruises ships and is now Commander of the line’s newest ship, the Edge class celebrity beyond.
While she fulfills a number of duties as Captain to oversee the ship’s entire crew and staff, ship safety and guest satisfaction, she also has other duties on board to a very special crew member – Bug Naked, her pet -Sphynx cat shares her quarters and is often seen traveling on board in a feline stroller.
Bug Naked recently celebrated her seventh birthday, and Captain McCue decided to bake the cat’s special cake himself – with hilarious results.
McCue bought a special “cat birthday kit” to bake a turkey flavored cake with yogurt icing in a fun fish shape. Made with organic ingredients, microwaveable and with a celebratory candle to complete the recipe, the idea seemed simple enough.
In a video Which has generated nearly 100,000 views, McCue documents her efforts and the unique challenges of baking a pet cake on a cruise ship.
“I need a third cup of water – I don’t have measuring cups”, McCue saidShe hit her first obstacle right after opening the package.
She also lacked non-stick spray for the fish-shaped mold, but improvised with olive oil (which is safe for cats in small amounts). Bug Naked’s food measuring spoon, which measures a quarter cup, was enough to estimate the water measurement.

Baking the cake was another unexpected surprise. The baking time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds was more than enough to produce a strong and not entirely pleasant smell.
“I won’t lie, this is disgusting” McCue said, stifling a gag while the cake cooked. “That smell… Ugh.”
McCue glazed one of the three resulting cakes and decorated it with a ring of treats before adding the candle and presenting it to her favorite cat. However, Bug Naked was less than impressed with the results. While sniffing the cake, she ended up just eating a few of the treats.
Of course with Celebrity Beyond with 15 restaurants and 5 cafesnot to mention the room service and additional bars and lounges, maybe the best thing would be to get Bug Naked a special treat to go for her next birthday!
Pets on board
Cruise fans who might want to party with their own pets on board should note that Bug Naked is a very special exception to the cruise line’s pet policy. Only service dogs are allowed onboard Celebrity Cruises ships, a policy similar to most cruise lines.
Guests who intend to bring a service dog onboard must notify the cruise line’s Access Department at the time of booking and no later than 30 days prior to departure to arrange a “spare holding” for the animal.
Guests should also review all Celebrity Cruises offers. Policies and guidelines for service dogs before you book a cruise or set sail.
