Grimaldi Group celebrated the delivery of Great Antwerp, the first of six vessels in its new G5 class.

The new ship class is a step up from the G4 ships delivered in 2014-2015 and has twice the container capacity.

Built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and ordered just over two years ago, the vessels are 250m long, 38m wide and have a deadweight tonnage of 45,684 dwt. Grimaldi said the ships could carry 4,700 linear meters of rolling cargo, 2,500 CEU (car equivalent units) and 2,000 TEU.

The five remaining G5 ships will be delivered in 2023 and 2024 and will all serve the service from Northern Europe to West Africa.

Grimaldi said the main engine and auxiliary diesel generators meet Tier III NOx requirements and the ships will also benefit from cold ironing capabilities, variable frequency propulsion devices to maximize onboard engine efficiency, low-friction hull coatings and hybrid emission control systems.

CO₂ emissions per tonne of transported cargo will be up to 43% lower on Great Antwerp compared to other multipurpose Grimaldi RoRo vessels, the company said.

“The delivery of this ship marks the beginning of a new era for our group,” said Guido Grimaldi. “Following the success of our five G3 class vessels, six G4 class vessels and 10 Eurocargo class vessels, all operated by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. were built, we are now inaugurating a new class of multipurpose RoRo vessels called ‘G5’. This new series of ships responds even more efficiently to the demand for high-quality transport services on deep sea routes and to the needs related to environmental protection. We are thus taking another important step on the path we have been taking for several years, to serve our main routes with a young, modern and environmentally friendly fleet.”

The handover of the new vessel was celebrated at a ceremony in Ulsan, attended by Hyung-Kwan Kim, President and CEO of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd, Guido Grimaldi, Deep Sea Commercial & Operations Director of Grimaldi Group, and shipyard representatives, Grimaldi and its customers all over the world.

All G5 class units will be delivered between 2023 and 2024 and will be used in the Grimaldi Group’s maritime services between Northern Europe and West Africa.
