Kongsberg Maritime’s rim-drive azimuth thruster has been awarded the Silent-E notation by DNV, making it the first of its kind to receive this certification. This achievement was demonstrated on the new commissioning service operation vessel Norwind Hurricane and its sister vessels, where the thruster proved to be highly effective in reducing underwater noise pollution during a recent trial. An extensive underwater noise study using hydrophones placed on the seabed confirmed the thruster’s ability to significantly reduce noise levels.

Roy Ove Standal, Chief Operating Officer at Norwind Offshore, highlighted the benefits of the rim-drive propulsion system, including notable energy savings and increased onboard comfort due to lower noise levels. The Silent-E notation further underscores the company’s commitment to environmental protection. Leif Vartdal, a hydrodynamics specialist at Kongsberg Maritime, explained that rim-drive thrusters are quieter than conventional thrusters due to their simpler design with fewer moving parts and excellent hydrodynamic characteristics. By eliminating hydrodynamically induced noise caused by traditional thruster designs, rim-drive thrusters offer energy savings and reduced maintenance costs.

The simplified propulsion system of rim-drive thrusters leads to enhanced operational efficiency and lower total cost of ownership. This is achieved through fewer mechanical components, resulting in reduced maintenance requirements and improved energy efficiency. The innovative design of rim-drive thrusters, with a ring propeller that eliminates blade tips, significantly reduces noise generation and contributes to a more environmentally friendly maritime operation. Overall, the Silent-E notation highlights the effectiveness of the rim-drive azimuth thruster in reducing underwater noise pollution and improving operational efficiency.
