On Monday, a commercial fishing vessel named El Cañavera began to take on water and eventually sank just off the coast of Galicia, as reported by local search and rescue authorities. The incident occurred approximately one nautical mile off Punta Candelaria, a cape north of the port of Cedeira on Galicia’s northwestern coast. The crew of the vessel abandoned ship and were rescued by the nearby fishing vessel Brisas de Cedeira, with all four crew members safely delivered to Cedeira.
Search and rescue authorities promptly responded to the distress call by dispatching a rescue helicopter and rescue launches Salvamar Shaula and LS Pardo Bazan. The crew of El Cañavera had reported their imminent danger of sinking before abandoning ship into a life raft, which was reached by Brisas de Cedeira within 20 minutes. The skipper of Brisas de Cedeira, Angel Gonzalez, mentioned that they were close to the sinking vessel and had the crew in sight before it disappeared beneath the water.
Following the sinking of El Cañavera, the wreck was marked and its position broadcasted to reduce the risk to other vessels navigating the area. The cause of the vessel’s sinking is currently under investigation by authorities. The boat’s bow remained visible above water as of Monday, serving as a reminder of the recent maritime incident off the coast of Galicia.
