The “Survey on Gender Equality in Indian Maritime Industry (2024)” report, released on August 12th, provides insight into the progress and challenges faced by women in the Indian maritime sector over the past five years. Developed by Maritime SheEO with support from the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mumbai, this follow-up survey highlights the increasing participation of women in the industry since 2019.
Key findings of the report reveal a significant rise in female CEOs from 3.9% in 2019 to 21.4% in 2024, along with a growing adoption of gender-neutral practices by companies. Despite these advancements, challenges such as marginal growth in the number of women seafarers and inconsistent application of global standards like the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles persist, underscoring the need for targeted interventions.
Ms. Sanjam Sahi Gupta, founder of Maritime SheEO, emphasizes the importance of ongoing efforts to improve opportunities for women in the maritime sector. The report calls for addressing barriers to career advancement and creating more inclusive workplaces, particularly in seafaring roles. The report will be discussed in a dedicated panel at the Maritime SheEO Conference 2024 in Mumbai, where industry leaders and stakeholders will convene to explore strategies for promoting gender equality in the sector.
