The Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port (SMP), formerly known as Kolkata Port, is set to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for the International Container Transhipment Port (ICTP) at Great Nicobar’s Galathea Bay. The report is expected to reach the Ministry of Shipping in the next two to three days. However, the responsible party for the port’s development remains unclear, as SMP was only entrusted with preparing the DPR.
Despite lower expected traffic growth due to renovation work at Khidirpur Dock 1 and 2, the port aims to end the current financial year with cargo throughput of 68 million tonnes, expecting a 5 percent traffic growth. The Kolkata Port and Haldia Dock Complex saw double-digit growth in cargo handling during 2022-23.
Plans to create a special economic zone (SEZ)-like development area are in the initial stages, with around 25 acres in Kolkata and 125 acres in Haldia under consideration. Additionally, a joint inspection was conducted to assist the West Bengal government’s request for a tea park. The port is also working to increase its installed capacity by 30 million tonnes by 2030.
