Green Marine UK, a marine services firm based in Orkney, has expanded its environmental monitoring services for offshore wind projects. The company has seen a surge in contracts with Scotland’s Marine Directorate, leading to the delivery of ‘full-scope’ projects. This expansion comes after 18 months of continuous work, primarily involving the collection of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) devices. These devices, equipped with underwater microphones, are used to monitor migratory fish, marine animals, and the environment, providing valuable data for offshore wind developers and government stakeholders to protect marine ecosystems and comply with environmental regulations.
Initially known for providing vessel charter services for environmental monitoring projects, Green Marine has quickly developed additional expertise in the field. This has resulted in more detailed work scopes, including the deployment and collection of Environmental Monitoring (EM) devices and data processing. The company has also been involved in ‘catch and tag’ projects to monitor fish movement. As a result of securing a significant share of contracts through Scotland’s Marine Directorate, Green Marine is now being approached directly by wind farm operators, with new contracts set to begin later this month.
The UK has the second-largest offshore wind market globally, with plans to triple capacity to 50GW by 2030. Much of this new development is in areas where Green Marine has already conducted extensive PAM operations. In response to market demand, the company is expanding its environmental monitoring services to offer a full scope service, from device deployment to data processing with trusted partners. The expansion has already yielded results, with new projects scheduled for the fourth quarter, involving the deployment of scientific equipment in the Pentland Firth region. Myles Metson, Green Marine UK’s Operations and Technology Director, highlighted the company’s commitment to meeting the growing demand in the offshore wind industry.
