Pop star Gwen Stefani christened Carnival’s new cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee, in a ceremony in Galveston, the ship’s homeport. Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy and Galveston Mayor Craig Brown were present as Stefani released a champagne bottle against the hull with a Texas-style lasso. Stefani was chosen as the ship’s godmother due to her promotion of diversity, charitable work, leadership, and fun-loving nature.
Stefani also performed at an invite-only concert for attendees, which was partially shared on social media. Carnival Jubilee is a 6,500-passenger ship powered by LNG and features an onboard roller coaster, making it the first Texas-based vessel with this attraction. The ship’s design pays homage to Carnival’s vessels from the 1980s-90s, and Stefani’s selection as godmother reflects this era, as her breakthrough album with No Doubt was released in 1995.
The ship’s Texas-themed design, including the “Lone Star” logo on the bow, is a tribute to Carnival’s success in the Texas cruise market. The ceremony also marked a milestone for Carnival, as it would have been the 100th birthday of founder Ted Arison. Carnival Jubilee is the company’s largest ship, and the Galveston terminal was renovated to accommodate its debut, with upgrades to the roof, dock, and interior.
