Hapag-Lloyd, a leading container shipping company, is conducting trials of NexusWave, a groundbreaking global service offered by Inmarsat Maritime. This service combines various connectivity networks to create a single, fully managed solution. The trials aim to address the need for robust connectivity in the maritime industry, enhancing communication and security for both company operations and crew members. NexusWave offers a unique experience akin to working in an office or being at home, ensuring constant connectivity without concerns about usage limitations or speed fluctuations. It also provides visibility into costs and the potential for future upgrades to the ViaSat-3 network.
The tests conducted by Hapag-Lloyd will evaluate how high-speed internet connections can support critical business functions by enabling the migration of IT services to the cloud. This shift will allow onboard personnel to collaborate seamlessly with office-based colleagues and access IT services previously available only on land. Patrick Briest, Senior Director of IT at Hapag-Lloyd, lauded NexusWave for transforming vessels into “floating offices” integrated with onshore IT systems and cloud services. This advancement is expected to streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance crew IT services.
NexusWave leverages SD-WAN technology to prioritize traffic intelligently, ensuring continuous connectivity for mission-critical operations and supporting services like remote inspections via video streaming. The service also enhances crew connectivity by managing business and welfare channels separately. Additionally, security is a core focus, with data encrypted at the ship level and shielded by enterprise-grade infrastructure trusted by leading organizations worldwide. Gert-Jan Panken, VP Sales at Inmarsat Maritime, emphasized the strategic value of NexusWave for Hapag-Lloyd, highlighting the transformational impact on maritime operations and the commitment to exceeding customer expectations.
