Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal has introduced the “Harit Sagar” Green Port Guidelines in an effort to reduce carbon intensity and promote an eco-friendly environment in the country’s major ports. The guidelines include various incentives aimed at encouraging sustainability, such as prioritizing ships using cleaner fuels or offering discounts on berth fees for those equipped with shore power receiving facilities. Additionally, private ship operators are encouraged to use alternative fuels like methanol, ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cell technology in ports.

To ensure environmental compliance, State Pollution Control Boards regularly monitor air and water quality in ports and conduct environmental audits. All ports adhere to the MARPOL Convention and follow strict environmental guidelines. Larger ports like Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh have already implemented measures to reduce pollution, including compliance with Directorate General of Shipping Guidelines and using solar energy for CO2 reduction. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways also mentioned the construction of sewage treatment plants to further reduce pollution levels.

The guidelines also highlight the promotion of green fuels such as CNG, LNG, hydrogen, and electric fleets for truck operators in ports. Moreover, existing public-private partnerships in ports are encouraged to adopt environmentally friendly practices, including carbon-neutral designs and the use of greener fuels. These efforts are aimed at creating a sustainable and eco-friendly ecosystem within major ports, aligning with the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and reducing carbon emissions in the shipping industry.
