Vehicle transport company Höegh Autoliners has partnered with Norwegian green ammonia supplier North Ammonia to fuel some of the industry’s first large ocean-going vessels powered by ammonia. The agreement envisages a planned production facility in Norway becoming operational in 2027. Höegh Autoliners has committed to supplying at least 5% of its deepwater operations with green ammonia by 2030 and expects its ships to consume at least 100,000 tons of green ammonia by that year. Aurora-class ammonia-capable dual-fuel vessels will initially consume marine gas oil (MGO) and LNG once they hit the water but with modifications, the ships can be converted to utilise ammonia or methanol.

North Ammonia is a joint venture between Vergia, part of Arendals Fossekompani, and Grieg Edge. North Ammonia’s production facility, located at the port of Arendal in Norway, intends to produce green ammonia at scale and export it throughout Europe. The project is scheduled for commissioning in 2027. The Amsterdam-Rotterdam Antwerp area is expected to be the location for the green ammonia bunker as part of the partnership between Höegh Autoliners and North Ammonia. The distribution of the green ammonia to bunker ports in Europe will be covered by Grieg’s future ammonia bunker vessels.
