Hurricane Hilary in the East Pacific has strengthened to Category 4 intensity with winds of 145 mph as it heads towards California. The hurricane is expected to make landfall in Mexico before hitting California and the US Southwest with heavy rains. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings have been issued along the Baja California coast, and flooding and landslides are likely across the peninsula. The storm may strengthen further and possibly reach Category 5 status before weakening as it moves over cooler water. By the time Hilary reaches Baja California, winds are expected to weaken to about 75 mph. However, widespread torrential rains are still expected in California and the US Southwest, which could cause power outages, mudslides, flooding, and disruptions to ground and air traffic. Flood watches have been issued for parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.
