Kamila Calko, a former Canadian Coast Guard captain, is launching SeaLight, an initiative aimed at increasing the number of women in the male-dominated marine industry. With only two percent of women currently in the industry, Calko believes that creating a more inclusive environment will allow for everyone to thrive. SeaLight will offer keynote speaking, corporate talks, and tailored seminars to promote education and empowerment within the industry.
SeaLight Sisters, a community app, will also be launched to help women connect and find support within the industry. The official launch event for SeaLight will take place on May 4 at Sunset Labs in Victoria, with a livestream available for those unable to attend in person. Calko hopes that through initiatives like SeaLight, the marine industry will become more diverse and inclusive over time.
Calko acknowledges that change within the industry will take time, but remains optimistic about the impact SeaLight can have. The initiative aims to not only increase the number of women in the marine industry, but also create a supportive community for women working in the field.
