Orca AI, a maritime technology company, conducted a comprehensive analysis of its automated situational awareness platform and found that it led to significant operational gains for clients in 2023. The analysis was based on 15 million nautical miles-worth of data collected from 267 customer vessels equipped with the Orca AI platform, resulting in a 172,716-tonnes reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel savings. The fleet as a whole saw a 26% increase in average minimum distance sailed, a 33% reduction in close encounters in open waters, and a 40% decline in crossing events.

The Orca AI platform features the onboard SeaPod lookout unit, equipped with high-resolution cameras to provide an unmatched field of view. The computer vision data generated is fused with other sensor data from existing sensors onboard the vessel and displayed on a user-friendly interface on the bridge, providing alerts and recommendations to support safe navigation. The platform also allows fleet managers to monitor navigational behaviors, investigate anomalies, and isolate events for training purposes.

Orca AI’s CTO and Co-founder, Dor Raviv, highlighted the platform’s role in creating a safer and more efficient shipping industry, reducing fuel consumption, and emissions, and supporting corporate sustainability targets and maintaining CII scores for ships. He also expressed optimism for achieving even better results in the coming 12 months.
